Annual report

The 2024 managed waterfowl hunting season at Shiawassee River State Game Area (SRSGA) was a mix of highs and lows. The growing season started well, with sharecroppers planting corn strips in the managed units on time. Buckwheat was also planted on schedule but did not fare well due to crop damage from wildlife and subsequent drought conditions. Some corn was affected by wildlife damage and drought as well. Corn strips in the 30s, 40s, 1–4 and 9–14 performed well.

Unseasonably warm, dry weather persisted through most of the regular waterfowl season. From Nov. 28 to Dec. 2, temperatures dropped from the 50s to below freezing. Freezing and ice-up conditions followed, closing out the 58-day regular season. In 2024, hunters at SRSGA harvested 4,489 ducks over 5,132 trips, averaging 1.02 ducks per trip, along with 644 geese. The duck harvest was 3,049 fewer than the five-year average.

Draw participation dwindled as the season progressed due to clear skies and above-normal temperatures. Many draws barely reached 30 parties, and once ice-up conditions occurred, numbers dropped to fewer than five parties per draw. Weekly refuge counts were among the highest recorded at SRSGA, likely due to the warm weather and the availability of invertebrates still active in the refuge’s wetlands. The highest refuge count was 31,510 waterfowl during the week of Nov. 25.
