Uniform Approval Process

In accordance with Section 19 of the Act, any person providing the services of a private security guard must be in uniform and the uniform must have approval from the Department before use. Failure to have approvals in place may result in revocation of a license per MCL 338.1060(1)(b) or criminal penalties per MCL 338.1082.

 

UNIFORM REVIEW (REQUIRED):

Please email the Licensing Division at CSCLOnline@michigan.gov and request a “Uniform and Insignia Review”.  Include the following in your email:

  • Full name of licensee as printed on the license
  • License number
  • Clear photo(s) or proof(s) of all pieces of the uniform and insignias, such as polos/shirts, jackets/coats, pants, hats, etc. (Any uniform item that has not been approved shall not be used.)
  • Shoulder identification patch sizing (Submit pictures of the item next to a ruler or provide sizing information directly from the manufacturer.)
  • Full name of licensee as printed on the license
  • License number
  • Clear photo(s) or proof(s) of the badge or shield (Any badge or shield that has not been approved shall not be used.)
  • Once your uniform and insignias are reviewed, you will receive an email response informing you whether your submission was approved or denied.  If denied, detailed information on what is further required will be sent.


BADGE OR SHIELD REVIEW:

If a badge or shield is part of your uniform, it must also be approved by the Department before use. 

Please email the Licensing Division at CSCLOnline@michigan.gov and request a “Badge or Shield Review”.  Include the following in your email:

  • Full name of licensee as printed on the license
  • License Number
  • Clear photo(s) or proof(s) of the badge or shield (Any badge or shield that has bot been approved shall not be used.)

Once your badge or shield is reviewed, you will receive an email response informing you whether your submission was approved or denied.  If denied, detailed information on what is further required will be sent.

 

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

  • Uniforms and insignia cannot deceive or confuse the public or be identical with that of a law enforcement officer of the federal government, state, or a political subdivision of the state in the community of the license holder.
  • Shoulder identification patches must be worn on all uniform jackets, coats, and shirts.
  • Shoulder identification patches must include the name of the agency as licensed by the Department.
  • Shoulder identification patches or emblems must not be less than 3 inches by 5 inches in size.
  • A badge or shield must not be worn unless approved by the department.
