July 15, 2020 - The Michigan Liquor Control Commission has directed a $10,000 donation from the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA) to the Food Bank Council of Michigan (FBCM) to provide much-needed food assistance to residents in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NABCA made the $10K donations to each of its 17 member states and jurisdictions, including the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
“Michiganders have come together in incredible ways to support each other during this pandemic,” Governor Whitmer said. “I’m grateful for the generous gift from the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association and Michigan Liquor Control Commission to help put food on the table for so many families.”
FBCM’s member regional food banks, subsidiary distribution organizations and branch warehouses safely store and provide millions of pounds of surplus vegetables, fruits and other grocery items to more than 3,000 local agencies that serve each of the 83 counties in Michigan, including: food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, hospices, domestic violence shelters, Head Start programs, after school programs, half-way houses and group homes for the mentally ill. Since 1984, FBCM has worked to alleviate hunger statewide by increasing emergency food resources and advocating on behalf of the hunger relief network.
“The world has experienced unprecedented, negative circumstances due to the loss and hardship caused by the spread of COVID-19,” said Jim Sgueo, NABCA president and CEO. “It is our hope that this contribution will help ease the burden of hunger that so many Michigan families find themselves faced with every day.”
The MLCC has been a member of NABCA since 1938. The two organizations have collaborated on numerous community efforts in the past. MLCC makes alcohol beverages available for consumption while protecting the consumer and the general public through regulation of those involved in the importation, sale, consumption, distribution, and delivery of these alcohol beverage products. The MLCC’s fiscal year 2019 profit in liquor sales of $248 million was transferred to the State’s General Fund (an increase of $17.2 million from 2018), for appropriation by the Michigan Legislature to support a wide range of state programs. Over the last decade, the MLCC has transferred $1.9 billion to the State’s General Fund.
Established in 1938, NABCA is the national association representing the Control State Systems - those jurisdictions that directly control the distribution and sale of beverage alcohol within their borders. Headquartered in Arlington, VA, NABCA’s mission is to support member jurisdictions in their efforts to protect public health and safety and assure responsible and efficient systems for beverage alcohol distribution and sales.
