Michigan Hosts Midwest Occupational Licensing Summit
October 11, 2024
LANSING, MI – This week the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) hosted the Midwest Occupational Licensing Summit with participants from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
The second annual summit brought together regulatory leaders to share innovative ideas and solutions to the challenges facing occupational licensing and enforcement while also strengthening partnerships with fellow Midwestern states.
“Reducing barriers for licensed professionals is a top priority for LARA, which is why we were eager to host this year's summit," said Marlon I. Brown, Director of LARA. “As LARA continues to work tirelessly to protect people and promote businesses, we know that partnerships like these are exactly what will make us successful.”
Participants heard from experts and engaged in dialogue on a range of topics, including substance abuse disorder programs, nursing homes, cannabis regulations, workforce shortages and initiatives, as well as skilled trades and mass timber.
While tackling the issues facing the occupational and professional regulatory community, participants of the summit had the opportunity to tour the state capitol, hear from State Senator Sam Singh, and visit Michigan State University’s STEM Teaching and Learning Facility, the first mass timber building in Michigan.
“It is always a fruitful and engaging experience when we can connect with our Midwest partners to seek solutions to the common challenges facing licensing state regulatory agencies," said Director Brown.
