MI Liquor Control Commission Urges Michiganders to Be Safe on the Roads this Holiday Season

Thanksgiving Eve is one of the biggest bar nights of the year, as friends and families gather for the holiday.

The Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) urges everyone to celebrate responsibly by avoiding binge drinking, drinking and driving, and planning ahead for a sober ride home.

“Celebrating Thanksgiving Eve responsibly when consuming alcoholic beverages will help make sure your holiday season remains safe and festive,” says Kristin Beltzer, Chair of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.  “Whether planning to enjoy Thanksgiving Eve at a favorite local bar or hosting a holiday party, we can all work together to keep our roads safe from drunk drivers to ensure our family and friends have a safe holiday season.”

The MLCC encourages consumers to keep these safety tips in mind to throughout the Thanksgiving holiday weekend:

  • Plan a sober ride home before you head out. Once drinking begins, decision-making becomes impaired.
  • Designate a sober driver. Or use a rideshare service such as Lyft or Uber, a taxi, or public transportation.
  • Do not feel pressured to drink or overindulge. It is always okay to decline without providing a reason.
  • If a friend is about to drink and drive, intervene. Take their keys and help arrange a safe way home.
  • If you see a suspected drunk driver on the road, call 911 to notify law enforcement.

The MLCC joins the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in reminding Michiganders that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving. For more information, visit www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/drunk-driving.
