Michigan Governor Proclaims May Building and Electrical Safety Month

LANSING, MI - Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued proclamations designating May as Building Safety Month and Electrical Safety Month, highlighting the professionals whose work helps ensure safe structures and communities across Michigan.

Each May, national awareness campaigns led by the International Code Council (ICC) and the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) bring attention to the importance of building and electrical safety across the country.

“Building and Electrical Safety Month gives us the opportunity to appreciate and support our skilled trades professionals and promote awareness of this important work,” said Marlon I. Brown, Director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). “Though May brings heightened attention to building safety, our commitment to safeguarding the places where people live, work, and gather remains steadfast throughout the year.”

This year’s theme for Building Safety Month is “Built to Last,” reaffirming the value and importance of resilient and reliable infrastructure. LARA’s Bureau of Construction Codes works to ensure that homes and buildings constructed throughout Michigan are safe, sound, and sustainable.

LARA, in partnership with the ICC and ESFI, will continue supporting building and electrical professionals through training, outreach efforts, and education activities that promote safety and awareness throughout the month of May.
