LARA Releases Consumer Guide to Help Michigan Homeowners Avoid Costly Home Improvement Mistakes

LANSING, MI – As home improvement season ramps up across Michigan, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), in partnership with the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA), has released a new Consumer Guide to Home Improvement Projects to help homeowners navigate construction and remodeling projects with confidence.

The 13-page guide includes information on selecting qualified contractors, understanding contracts, recognizing warning signs of fraud, and navigating the permitting process. The resource is designed to help homeowners protect their financial investment, avoid unnecessary setbacks, and better understand their rights and responsibilities throughout a project.

“Home improvement projects can be a major investment, and consumers deserve the tools to protect themselves from fraud, delays, and unexpected costs,” said Andrew Brisbo, Director of the Bureau of Construction Codes (BCC). “This guide gives Michigan homeowners practical information they can use to confidently hire contractors, understand the permitting process, and make informed decisions before work begins.”
