LARA Encourages Safe Grilling and Fireworks Use Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

LANSING, MI – The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and State Fire Marshal Tom Hughes are reminding residents to prioritize safety while grilling and using fireworks as they gather this Memorial Day weekend to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“Memorial Day is a time to reflect, remember, and spend time with family and friends, but it is also a time when preventable fires and injuries increase,” said Marlon I. Brown, Director of LARA. “Taking simple safety precautions can help protect Michigan families and keep holiday celebrations safe.”

“Even though grilling and outdoor celebrations are part of the holiday, they also bring real fire risk when safety steps are overlooked,” said State Fire Marshal Tom Hughes. “A few easy steps can prevent fires, protect your home, and keep your family safe.”

LARA encourages residents to follow these grilling safety tips

  • Always grill outdoors and away from homes, garages, decks, and other structures
  • Keep grills at least 10 feet from buildings and never use them on balconies or under overhangs
  • Never leave a grill unattended while in use
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from grilling areas
  • Clean grills regularly to reduce grease buildup and prevent grease flare-ups

For Gas Grills:

  • Check for gas leaks before use
  • Always open the grill lid before lighting
  • If you smell gas, turn off the grill and move away until it is safe

Charcoal Grills:

  • Use only approved starter fluid
  • Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start a fire
  • Allow coals to cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container as they can remain hot for hours after use

Under Michigan law, consumer fireworks may be used on the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Memorial Day until 11:45 p.m. each night. Residents should purchase fireworks from licensed retailers and leave professional-grade display fireworks to trained experts. Check your local ordinances on additional fireworks requirements.

LARA and State Fire Marshal Hughes wish all Michiganders a safe Memorial Day weekend as we honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.
