In Michigan, a boating safety certificate (or boater education card) is required for anyone born on or after July 1, 1996, who operates a vessel.
You can earn your boater safety certificate by completing a course in one of three ways:
Register and find a course near you by entering your zip code in our online search tool.
Approved online courses allow you to study at your own pace from home using electronic materials and videos. Register through boat-ed.
For a more engaging experience, these courses use multimedia elements like animations and videos to create virtual, real-life scenarios. Complete the course at your own pace from home by registering through ilearntoboat.
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and United States Power Squadron (also known as America's Boating Club) offer fundamental to advanced courses. These classes can provide the knowledge needed to obtain a boating safety certificate and may have associated fees.
