Pheasant releases temporarily paused at Rose Lake State Game Area due to plane crash investigation

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is pausing scheduled pheasant hunting releases within the Rose Lake State Game Area following a fatal plane crash Oct. 16 near the area. The Rose Lake SGA is located in Clinton and Shiawassee counties.

A small aircraft went down around 5 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Clark and Peacock roads in Bath Township, resulting in the deaths of all three people on board. The investigation, led by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, is ongoing.

To ensure the safety of hunters and investigators, the DNR has paused the scheduled releases of pheasants at Rose Lake until further notice. The state game area will remain open to public use, but all visitors to the state game area are urged to avoid the affected area until investigation crews have left, currently estimated to be later this week.

The DNR will provide updates as soon as pheasant releases at Rose Lake can safely resume.

“We understand this is a disappointment for hunters eager to enjoy the pheasant season,” said Mark Mills, a manager in the DNR Wildlife Division’s southern Michigan region. “However, public safety and the integrity of the ongoing investigation are our top priorities. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation during this difficult time.”
