To help ensure Ludington State Park continues to meet the needs of visitors and the community, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is asking for public input on an update to the general management plan for this popular state park set along Lake Michigan.
Anyone interested in sharing their opinions, ideas and experiences is encouraged to participate in an online survey, available through Sunday, Oct. 4.

The DNR uses general management plans to define a long-range planning and management strategy that protects a park's natural and cultural resources, while also addressing recreation and educational needs and opportunities. This planning process will update Ludington State Park’s current general management plan completed in 2016, establishing new 10-year actions.
"Many exciting improvements have occurred at Ludington State Park since the existing general management plan was created in 2016, including a recent $4.85 million investment through the American Rescue Plan Act, which funded newly repaved roads, upgraded pedestrian walkways and improved parking areas," said Debbie Jensen, DNR park management plan administrator. "The public's input will provide valuable insights to guide park management over the next 10 years."
Ludington State Park, situated between the 5,000-acre Hamlin Lake and 7 miles of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline, features scenic sand dunes, three modern campgrounds, a rustic hike-in campground, the iconic Big Sable Point Lighthouse, 21 miles of marked trails and more. A 1-mile stretch of the Big Sable River runs through the park and provides excellent opportunities for fishing, paddling and tubing.
Visitors can also explore local ecology at the historic Lake Michigan Beach House, learn maritime history at the Big Sable Point Lighthouse or attend one of many year-round interpretive programs.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources honors the memory of Dr. Howard A. Tanner, former DNR director and Fisheries Division chief, who passed away Aug. 16 at the age of 102. Dr. Tanner is remembered for his conservation and fisheries management work, which has left an indelible mark on the state and created new fishing opportunities for Michigan anglers.
