Eddy Discovery Center welcomes community with new features, Earth Day celebration

After a yearlong closure for renovations, the Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center is opening its doors to visitors this weekend, April 18-19, for family-friendly fun and learning. It’s a great opportunity for guests to tour the newly upgraded facility located in Waterloo State Recreation Area in Washtenaw County.

Highlights include:

  • A 1 p.m. ribbon-cutting Saturday.
  • Live animal programs at 1 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, sponsored by the Waterloo Natural History Association
  • Nature-themed activities, in honor of Earth Day (April 22), that promote environmental stewardship.

Waterloo Recreation Area — the largest state park in the Lower Peninsula — boasts 11 inland lakes, a world-class trail system headlined by the DTE Energy Foundation Trail, and an array of opportunities and amenities for campers, anglers and hunters.

“We couldn’t be more excited that the Eddy Discovery Center is set to reopen,” said Matt Schweda, Waterloo Recreation Area supervisor. “The visitor center is at the heart of the park, bringing school children, families and outdoor enthusiasts together to learn about and connect with the park’s natural communities.”

Made possible thanks to $360,000 in federal relief funding from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Building Michigan Together Plan and $1.3 million from the DNR, renovations included a new roof, modernized atrium, state-of-the-art HVAC system and new exhibits. All enhancements were aimed at enriching the visitor experience and educational opportunities for the community.

“We are incredibly proud to showcase the improvements at the Eddy Discovery Center and to welcome guests back to explore, learn and connect with Michigan’s rich natural heritage,” said Holly Vaughn, the DNR’s southern Michigan interpretive field manager. “It’s a new chapter for our center, and we invite families, educators and nature enthusiasts of all ages to join us for a weekend of outdoor discovery, celebration and a renewed commitment to conservation.”
