Silver Lake ORV Area visitor use management study
Silver Lake ORV Area visitor use management study
The DNR has partnered with Michigan State University to conduct a comprehensive visitor use management study at Silver Lake ORV Area. Stemming from a need identified in the recent Silver Lake State Park General Management Plan, this study will gather data-driven insights to guide future decision-making, ensuring a sustainable and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
This study will address use patterns, visitor perceptions and operations – including staffing, vehicle capacity, traffic congestion, visitor safety, the voucher system and more. Additionally, environmental conditions relating to the critical dune environment will be taken into consideration.
To accurately capture use patterns and survey visitors across a full operational season, this project is anticipated to take approximately two years to complete.
Data collection
Visitor feedback is a vital part of this process. Throughout the 2026 ORV season, MSU researchers will be on-site conducting visitor surveys to help identify strategies for maintaining the park's ideal conditions. If selected, your participation is appreciated!
About the ORV Area
Silver Lake State Park features the popular 450-acre Silver Lake ORV Area – the only place east of the Mississippi River where you can drive motorized vehicles directly on the sand dunes. Visitors can also enjoy a 40-minute guided tour with Mac Wood's Dune Rides during the summer or return in the winter for dedicated horseback riding and fat-tire biking seasons.
