Shiawassee River State Game Area - Spring Birding Tour
Join us for a spring birding tour of the vast wetlands and diverse habitats of Shiawassee River State Game Area. Spring migration is underway, and we’ll look for waterfowl, shorebirds and songbirds on the move and sheltering in the marshes.
We’ll meet up at the St. Charles Field Office and walk or drive in a caravan to viewing spots, depending on driving conditions and where birds are present. Led by DNR staff, we’ll explore the dikes to look for a variety of species.
This is a free event, and entry to Shiawassee River State Game Area is also free. This area is funded by hunting licenses and managed for wildlife habitat.
Shiawassee River State Game Area is an Audubon Important Bird Area and is one of Michigan’s premier Wetland Wonders, where over 10,000 acres of diverse habitats are stewarded to provide exceptional habitat for migrating birds, as well as water filtration and flood mitigation for surrounding communities.
Know before you go:
- Restrooms and trash receptacles will be available at the field office.
- Dress for the weather – rain or shine – and wear boots or sturdy shoes.
- Participants should be prepared to navigate muddy, uneven ground and gravel-covered dikes. Please be aware that the trails are not considered accessible under Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.
- Bring binoculars or spotting scopes if you have them.
- For help identifying birds, download one or more free smartphone apps: Merlin Bird ID, eBird, iNaturalist or Audubon Bird Guide.
- Join us for light refreshments and opportunities to ask questions at the field office before and after the event.
