Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area - Spring Birding Tour
Join us for a spring birding tour at Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area on the western shore of Saginaw Bay. We’ll look for migrating waterfowl and songbirds along the coastal and emergent marshes.
We’ll meet up at the Nayanquing Point Field Office and walk or drive in a caravan to viewing spots, depending on where birds are present. Led by DNR staff, we’ll explore the dikes to look for a variety of species.
This is a free event, and entry to Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area is also free. This area is funded by hunting licenses and managed for wildlife habitat.
Know before you go:
- Restrooms and trash receptacles will be available the field office.
- Dress for the weather – rain or shine – and wear boots or sturdy shoes.
- Participants should be prepared to navigate muddy, uneven ground and gravel-covered dikes. Please be aware that the trails are not considered accessible under Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.
- Bring binoculars or spotting scopes if you have them.
- For help identifying birds, download one or more free smartphone apps: Merlin Bird ID, eBird, iNaturalist or Audubon Bird Guide.
Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area is an Audubon Important Bird Area and is one of Michigan’s premier Wetland Wonders, where 1,500 acres of wetlands are stewarded to provide exceptional habitat for migrating birds and wetland wildlife species. Tens of thousands of waterfowl, swans, songbirds and raptors migrate through the area every spring, and the viewing platform at the end of Kitchen Road is a great place to look for them.
