April 30, 2019 – The Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) served an order summarily suspending the nursing license of Susan Drust for negligence and failure to exercise due care at her practice in Norton Shores.

“The allegations against the licensee indicate that she put public health and safety at risk,” said Director Orlene Hawks. “Based on our findings, it was crucial for LARA to summarily suspend this licensee to protect patients in Michigan.”

LARA also served Drust with an accompanying administrative complaint that outlines her negligence as it relates to overprescribing and her failure to meet the minimal standards of practice of her profession. The specific allegations indicate that Drust:

  • Prescribed controlled substances to patients with documented evidence that they were abusing alcohol.
  • Prescribed unsafe combinations (e.g. benzodiazepines and/or sedatives, along with opioids) to patients without documenting the risk or rationale.
  • Failed to document addressing problematic urine drug screens.
  • Failed to document any consideration of alternatives to opioid treatment.

The individual patient examples that resulted in these allegations are available in the administrative complaint.

An order of summary suspension is a temporary measure to protect the public and not a final determination that a licensee has violated the Public Health Code. The Michigan Public Health Code provides for summary suspension of licenses when the public health, safety, or welfare requires emergency action.

LARA encourages all concerned residents, patients, parents and peers to file complaints against licensed health professionals who may allegedly be risking public health, safety or welfare.
