MRS helps customer get the training to thrive in a new career
June 03, 2026
Louis’s path with Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) toward obtaining a master’s degree and meaningful employment highlights remarkable resilience and self‑advocacy.
After receiving an Autism diagnosis in early adolescence and navigating childhood with limited support, he pushed himself academically despite persistent social and sensory challenges. Early jobs in retail, teaching and laboratory environments proved overwhelming due to fast-paced demands and sensory overload – which is what ultimately lead Louis to seek services with MRS.
When Louis first met with his MRS vocational rehabilitation counselor, he clearly described his challenges with communication, memory, coordination and sensory sensitivity. Although MRS provided job placement support, he soon recognized the available options did not match his strengths. Determined to pursue a career that better fits his abilities, Louis returned to school to study Health Information Services, finding an ideal blend of healthcare and data work.
The passion and perspective Louis exhibited, along with the support and financial assistance of MRS, resulted in Louis achieving his master’s degree from Grand Valley State University.
Louis was even quoted in a Grand Valley State University article advocating for mental health awareness: “We talk about data and technology all the time, but we don't talk enough about the human side — about stress, anxiety, or just needing help. I'd love to see the College create more space for that.”
As he completed his final coursework, Louis actively explored career opportunities and steadily grew more confident. His internship supervisor recognized his strong potential, providing a job lead and reference that helped him secure his current position as a Health Information Technologist.
In this role, Louis primarily works from home with data, records and Power BI projects—an environment well suited to his strengths and sensory needs. He takes pride in his contributions to an employer that supports people with disabilities.
Louis credits MRS for helping him understand his abilities and access the accommodation and guidance he needed. His journey reflects the power of perseverance, self-awareness and the right support. Today, he is thriving in a career that values his strengths and allows him to make a meaningful impact.
