From building in a classroom to working in million-dollar homes a young MRS customer finds his passion for construction
June 03, 2026
From a young age Andrew loved working with his hands and enjoyed fixing up cars or helping around the house.
Andrew was referred to the Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) Business Network Division by his MRS counselor to help him navigate his career through connecting with community partners and employers. His MRS Business Relations Consultant was able to connect Andrew to Next Step, a non-profit organization that provides job skills training and employment to community members.
“What’s been most helpful at Next Step is the love and support,” shared Andrew. “I’ve gained new skills for my woodworking business, but I’ve also learned how to carry myself and act professionally in different settings.”
Upon graduation Andrew had a variety of businesses that were open to hiring him and he ultimately accepted a position at Lumbermen’s, a 2020 MRS Business Champion Award recipient. He now is a countertop installer and works on a variety of projects. One day may involve working inside a million-dollar home, while another could mean restoring a house more than a century old.
“I love the guys I work with, the travel, and getting to meet cool people,” Andrew said. “Every project is different, and I’m always learning something new.”
Beyond the craftsmanship itself, Andrew says the trades offer something even more meaningful: teamwork, problem-solving and the satisfaction of ending each day knowing you gave your best effort. He also praised the company’s benefits, support system and work culture, calling it “the best company I’ve been with in years.”
