Bureau of Environment and Sustainability Director
Michael (Mike) Philip is the director of the Bureau of Environment and Sustainability in the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).
This bureau delivers soil and water conservation programs; regulates pesticides, fertilizers, seed, and nursery stock; certifies plants and plant products for market access in Michigan, throughout the country, and around the world; prevents and responds to invasive pests and plant diseases; and more.
Before becoming bureau director in 2024, Mike spent 21 years in the Pesticide and Plant Pest Management Division, where he coordinated detection and response efforts for invasive species, managed the MDARD’s plant nursery licensing and inspection program, and most recently served as division director.
Mike holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in entomology from Michigan State University and North Carolina State University, respectively.
