Laboratory and Consumer Protection Bureau Director
Craig VanBuren is the Director of the Laboratory and Consumer Protection Bureau. The bureau provides scientific and analytical services for the programs of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and other agencies. In addition, the bureau provides testing and consulting services on a fee basis to Michigan's industries and private citizens.
Craig also currently sits on the Board of Directors for the National Conference on Weights and Measures. He is the previous chair of NCWM, including spending several years as treasurer, and is active in the Central Weights and Measures Association serving as a member of the Executive Committee.
Craig attended Michigan Technological University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He started his career in the automotive industry; first designing chassis for motor homes and later designing parts for a Tier 1 supplier to Ford Motor Company; and then joining MDARD as a field Metrologist in 2000. He later transferred into the laboratory after training at NIST in basic, intermediate, and advanced mass calibrations. He became the Metrology Lab manager in 2003 and served in that role until 2010 when he became the Director of the Consumer Protection Section. In 2016, Craig was named the Director of the Laboratory Division, and in 2023 became the Director of the Laboratory and Consumer Protection Bureau.
