Boating safety certificate
How to get your certificate
Options
In Michigan, a boating safety certificate (or boater education card) is required for anyone born on or after July 1, 1996, who operates a vessel.
You can earn your boater safety certificate by completing a course in one of three ways:
- Classroom-based: Register and find a course near you by entering your zip code in our online search tool.
- Online: Approved online courses allow you to study at your own pace from home using electronic materials and videos. Register through boat-ed.
- Interactive (online): For a more engaging experience, these courses use multimedia elements like animations and videos to create virtual, real-life scenarios. Complete the course at your own pace from home by registering through ilearntoboat.
