From a homeless shelter to living independently: how MRS helped a customer find a job to support himself
July 02, 2025
Xavier transitioned from being homeless and without a job to living in his own apartment and obtaining a career with the assistance of Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS).
Xavier began working with MRS Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Katherine Lasinskas while he was living at a homeless shelter. He had prior experience as a janitor at a university, but life circumstances and his disabilities led him to lose that employment and housing.
He was determined to get back on his feet, but he did not know where to begin.
Through counseling and guidance, Katherine was able to assist him with creating a plan. Xavier first completed job readiness training to build back his confidence and improve his interview and employability skills. He then worked with a job placement specialist to create a resume, fill out applications and make connections in the community. Katherine met with him regularly to educate him on ways to overcome his barriers and provide guidance and support.
With the assistance of MRS, Xavier was able to obtain employment as a janitor at a local high school. After landing the job, MRS assisted with the cost of vehicle repairs so Xavier had reliable transportation to and from his job. Once he obtained an income, he qualified for his own apartment and was able to move out of the homeless shelter.
“MRS gave me an opportunity to earn a living and gain back my independence,” shared Xavier. “I would not be able to maintain my employment without the help of MRS. It’s not easy, but it is doable if you put in the work!”
Xavier continues to work with Katherine to ensure he can maintain his new employment.
