Unemployment Update #5

The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is transitioning to a new unemployment tax and benefits system called MiUI, which will replace the current Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM). MiUI Tax functions are live and Benefits functions are scheduled to be available November 9, 2026.

In this issue of the MiUI Unemployment Update, we are sharing guidelines on how many claims can be filed per quarter in MiUI.

Claim Filing Limits in MiUI

There is an important change coming to claim filing when MiUI for benefits launches on Monday, November 9, 2026.

Currently, workers seeking unemployment benefits can submit multiple claims if each previous attempt at a claim is denied. After MiUI launches, anyone applying for benefits will be limited to submitting only one initial claim per quarter. If that claim is denied, they will not be able to file another one until the following quarter (three months after the first claim was filed). This change seeks to eliminate the opportunity for denied filers to file repeatedly in a short period of time.

If a worker disagrees with their claim denial, they have protest rights to dispute the determination. More information on protest and appeals in MiUI will come in a future Unemployment Update.
