Drag racing update

On July 29, 2021, Gov. Whitmer signed into law PA 75 of 2021 exempting Silver Lake scramble area from the restrictions contained in the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code (MCL 257.626a). While drag racing is now a legal activity in this location, all other rules and laws still apply. Please note that grooming activities are suspended for the near future.

Best practices

Safety is first priority. Tips for safely riding the dunes.

  • Always use or wear appropriate safety gear, including a helmet.
  • Wear a seatbelt.
  • Maintain safe speeds and control of your vehicle at all times.
  • Respect our natural resources - pay attention to signage indicating boundaries and protection efforts underway.
  • Be aware of changing dune conditions.
  • Never operate above your skill level or capability of your vehicle.
  • Maintain safe distances between vehicles.
  • If modifying a vehicle, make sure safety features such as roll bars are included.
  • Spectators need to maintain a safe distance from vehicle in operation.

Dates & hours

Silver Lake State Park ORV area is open April 1 - Oct. 31 each year.

  • April 1 - April 30 (9 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
  • May 1 - Sept. 15 (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.)
  • Sept. 16 - Oct. 31 (9 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

Please note: Access to the ORV area and dunes is stopped ½ hour ahead of closing time each evening.
