Super Bowl Sunday: Michigan Liquor Control Commission Offers Tips to Licensees

February 1, 2018 – The Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) is reminding liquor licensees to serve patrons responsibly this weekend. There is always an expected increase in business at restaurants and bars for the Super Bowl and MLCC Chairman Andy Deloney wants to make sure that the state’s 19,000 liquor licensees do their part to help ensure a safe Super Bowl weekend.

"Have a good time this weekend – whether you are rooting for the Patriots or Eagles, or hoping and praying that it will soon be the Lions year – but do so responsibly,” said Deloney. “There are thousands of local businesses in Michigan that will be welcoming football fans into their establishments for the big game on Sunday, and they share responsibilities toward keeping their patrons safe. It is vital for licensees to stay informed of state laws – to make sure their employees are not overserving patrons and are only serving those of legal drinking age.”

Deloney recommends liquor licensees keep the following tips in mind:

  • Avoid overcrowding. This can lead to problems like altercations and obstructed exits, and is a safety and fire hazard. Know your establishment’s capacity level.
  • Know the signs of intoxication. Do not sell or serve alcoholic beverages to a person who appears intoxicated and do not allow an intoxicated person to consume alcoholic beverages on the licensed premises.
  • Establish a policy and procedure for staff to check identification. Licensees have a legal obligation to determine if a patron is 21 years old before selling or serving alcohol to them. Not only will violations lead to liquor code violations, providing alcohol to minors is a major offense that can lead to fines and time in jail. While some may be tempted to let minors drink during the big game, the punishment – and the danger – is not worth the risk.
  • It is the licensee’s responsibility to keep order and control of the premises by constant observance of customers and situations. Establish a policy and procedure for staff to report suspected illegal activity to management.
