A geographic information system (GIS) combines geography with computer systems to capture, store, analyze, and display location-based data. In simple terms, it is a map linked to a database.
MDOT’s GIS Unit supports the use of GIS software and hardware to solve spatial problems and improve transportation decision making. The unit manages enterprise GIS databases, linear referencing systems, web services, ArcGIS Online, the Open Data Portal, GIS news and training, and the Transportation Asset Management System (TAMS).

Linear Referencing stores and manages spatial data along measured linear features. MDOT currently uses Esri Roads and Highways to maintain its Linear Refencing System (LRS) and related data. The LRS webpage provides details and access to the latest versioned data.
