Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), MCL 15.231 et seq., allows individuals to request copies or inspections of most public records from public bodies. Requests must clearly describe the records being sought, and agencies may charge fees to cover the cost of responding. FOIA requests to MDOT may be submitted by email or mail and should include a name, phone number and mailing address.

Executive Directive 2019-11 requires each state department to designate a transparency liaison. This liaison helps the public access department records through the FOIA process, advocates for the disclosure of public records and supports transparency practices that encourage public participation in meetings.
