Designing, building and preserving structures
The Bureau of Bridges and Structures develops and implements statewide policies to ensure Michigan’s bridges and structures are safely designed, built, maintained, and preserved through efficient and innovative practices.

Structure Design
Structure Design provides statewide design support for MDOT trunkline structure projects. Structure Design delivers plans, specifications, and estimates for structures including bridges, culverts, and other ancillary structures.
Structure Construction
Provides statewide construction support to department projects with structural elements including, bridges, retaining walls, and sign and lighting support structures.
Structure Preservation and Management
The Office of Structure Preservation and Management is responsible for the administration of the overall bridge capital outlay program, NBI Program, and Preservation Section.
Geotechnical Services
Geotechnical Services Section supports the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of geotechnical features essential for MDOT’s bridge and heavy civil infrastructure.

Michigan has four public bridges (Mackinac, Blue Water, Gordie Howe International, International) and two private border crossings (Ambassador Bridge, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel). For tolls, travel documents, and traffic updates, visit the individual bridge or crossing website.
Blue Water Bridge
The Blue Water Bridge spans the St. Clair River between Port Huron, Michigan, and Point Edward and Sarnia, Ontario, and forming gateway linking Canada and the United States.
Gordie Howe International Bridge
International Bridge
The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge connects Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, with Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and is the only vehicular crossing between Ontario and Michigan within a 300-mile distance.
Mackinac Bridge
The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinac, connecting Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas.
