Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge painting project finishes early; all lanes now open
October 10, 2022
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. and Ontario - The $3 million (Canadian) painting project at the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge has been completed and all lanes on the bridge were reopened to traffic this morning.
The project finished three weeks early; it was initially expected to be completed by Nov. 1. Segments of the lanes on the north end of the bridge had been closed for painting crews.
The project, which coated the curb and service walk railing on the Canadian half of the bridge and included minor steel repairs, was fully funded through The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) with the help of a capital budget allocation approved by the Government of Canada.
The prime contractor, Hastings Painting Corp. of Windsor, Ontario, used a high-ratio calcium sulfonate alkyd (HRCSA) one-coat paint system. The innovative process offers cost savings, enhanced corrosion resistance, quicker completion time, and minimized disturbance to the environment and bridge customers.
