LANSING, Mich. - As summer turns to fall, temperatures become cooler, days grow shorter, and Michigan students return to school. Seasonal changes can impact road conditions and road safety. It is important to remember fall does not mark the end of Michigan’s road construction season. In fact, depending on weather conditions, many road and bridge projects will last through November.
2023 saw a busy construction season and many road projects have been completed, but a number will remain active as crews wrap up work. In addition, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) uses the fall months to perform necessary maintenance, such as pavement marking and pothole patching, before winter weather sets in.
That is why MDOT is asking all road users to remain alert and focused as they travel through work zones. Road construction is dangerous work year-round, but it can be especially challenging in fall due to changes in weather, travel patterns, and construction fatigue.
Keeping our work zones safe requires everyone’s full attention. Practicing positive driving behaviors like reducing speeds, eliminating distractions, and remaining calm can save lives. By being respectful and safe drivers, we can achieve zero deaths on our roads and in our work zones. Remember: You play a role in work zone safety. Work with us.
