STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) invites the public to participate in a virtual public meeting regarding the upcoming project on M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway). This project will impact the cities of Sterling Heights, Utica, Warren, and Shelby Township.

Project Details:
Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, March 4, southbound M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway) will be closed from 18 Mile Road to M-59 (Hall Road) for approximately three months for road and bridge work. The eastbound and westbound M-59 (Hall Road) ramps to southbound M-53 will also be closed.
Southbound M-53 traffic will be detoured via westbound M-59 (Hall Road) to southbound Mound Road, then eastbound 18 Mile Road to southbound M-53.
There will also be local traffic restrictions for bridge work on M-53 at the following intersections:
- Utica Road,
- 19 Mile Road, and
- Canal Road.
Clinton River Road will be closed over M-53 from late May to late August to replace the bridge deck and add new sidewalks.
This work is part of a $16 million project on M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway) between 18 Mile Road and M-59 (Hall Road) to resurface the roadway, perform concrete and guardrail repairs, repair 10 bridges, and resurfacing the 23 Mile Road ramps to M-53. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly supports 227 jobs.
