M-39 Dearborn/Allen Park project update: Lane closures increased to follow new work zone safety law
June 06, 2024
DEARBORN, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation is altering the original plans for work on northbound and southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway) from Pinecrest Drive, south of I-94, to M-153 (Ford Road) due to changes in the law regarding safer work zones that require a concrete barrier wall if crews are working overnight.
Since M-39 does not have enough shoulder room to add a wall, this $15.5 million project will now be required to have two lanes closed for crews to safely perform concrete patching, milling and resurfacing, and more. Crews will also perform routine maintenance within the closed sections of roadway, including drainage cleaning and barrier wall repairs.
Beginning 8 p.m. Friday, June 7, through Tuesday, June 11, northbound M-39 will have one lane open from I-94 to M-153 (Ford Road).
From Friday, June 14, through late summer/early fall, up to two lanes of northbound and southbound M-39 will be closed (depending on the work) between I-94 and M-153 (Ford Road). Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to plan extra commute time or choose alternative routes.
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 188 jobs.
