Pre-Application Form

The application process for Pure Michigan Byway designation consists of the following two steps:

  1. The sponsor must verify that the route is on the state trunkline system. The road must be either an I, M, or US highway. In addition, the sponsor should be prepared to show evidence of support from local units of government along the proposed byway. This support will be key in the development of a corridor management plan if the department approves the route's designation as a Pure Michigan Byway. The sponsor must prepare the pre-application form listing at least one or more of the following intrinsic qualities of the route: scenic, historic, and recreational.
  2. MDOT will make an initial review of the proposed route's eligibility. If the route has potential, the sponsor will submit a full application packet and be instructed to proceed with the process. Once completed and submitted, the application will be evaluated and if the road meets criteria, it becomes a Pure Michigan Byway. Once designated, signs, the Byway Driving Guide, and state map will be used to direct travelers to the roadway.

In addition to completing the pre-application form below, send a map of the roadway you plan to nominate to MDOT-Byways@Michigan.gov.
