Portage Marsh State Wildlife Area - Spring Birding Tour
Join us for a spring birding tour at Portage Marsh State Wildlife Area. Experts from the DNR and Common Coast Research and Conservation will lead a hike along a historic dike system and a Lake Michigan beach to look for raptors, shorebirds, songbirds, wading birds and waterfowl.
This is a free event, and entry to Portage Marsh State Wildlife Area is also free. This area is funded by hunting licenses and managed for wildlife habitat.
Know before you go:
- Meet at the dead end of Portage Point 11.4 Lane in Escanaba.
- Port-a-johns and trash receptacles will be available onsite.
- Dress for the weather – rain or shine – and wear boots or sturdy shoes.
- A limited number of binoculars are available to borrow. Bring binoculars or spotting scopes if you have them.
- Participants should be prepared to navigate muddy, uneven ground and gravel-covered dikes. Please be aware that the trails are not considered accessible under Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.
- For help identifying birds, download one or more free smartphone apps: Merlin Bird ID, eBird, iNaturalist or Audubon Bird Guide.
