August 31, 2017 - The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) served an order summarily suspending the medical license of Claude Hall, of Ypsilanti, MI. LARA took this action pursuant to the Public Health Code, which permits suspension of a health professional’s license when the public health, safety, or welfare requires emergency action.
LARA also served an administrative complaint alleging Dr. Hall overprescribed commonly abused and diverted controlled substances. Specifically, prescription data from the Michigan Automated Prescription System and further investigation by LARA’s Drug Monitoring Section revealed that Dr. Hall prescribed potentially dangerous combinations of benzodiazepines, opioids, and muscle relaxants to patients. The complaint also alleges that Dr. Hall’s patient records fail to support his prescribing and show little evidence of monitoring patients for abuse and diversion of their medications.
An important recommendation of Gov. Snyder’s Michigan Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Task Force called for a more comprehensive enforcement program against licensed health professionals who participate in overprescribing. LARA’s Drug Monitoring Section works to identify, investigate and seek enhanced sanctions against licensed health care professionals who overprescribe dangerous drugs, such as opiates, for other than lawful medical purposes.
An order of summary suspension is a temporary measure to protect the public and not a final determination that a licensee has violated the Public Health Code.
