MDOT provides funding for competitive grant programs and loan programs primarily, but not exclusively, for state and local road agencies. MDOT's goal is to leverage investments and target them to have the greatest impact possible on economic development and Michigan job creation.

The USDOT and other agencies award federal discretionary grants to eligible applicants through a highly-competitive nationwide process based on qualifications and merit.
National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program
The NEVI Formula Program will provide dedicated funding to states to strategically deploy EV charging infrastructure and establish an interconnected network to facilitate data collection, access, and reliability.
Michigan Shared Streets and Spaces Grant (SSSG) Program

The TEDF program provides funding for transportation improvements that enhance the state's ability to compete in a global economy, promote economic growth and improve the quality of life in the State of Michigan.
Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP)
TAP is a competitive grant program that funds projects such as bike paths, streetscapes, and transportation facility historic preservation to enhance the intermodal transportation system, and promote walkability and quality of life.
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program
SRTS is a school-based international movement to make it safe, convenient and fun for children, including those with disabilities, to bicycle and walk to school.
State Infrastructure Bank (SIB) Program
The SIB loan program provides loans to public entities for eligible transportation improvements and complements traditional funding techniques.
Local Bridge Program
The Local Bridge Program develops and manages a 3-year bridge program to improve, replace and maintain the local bridge inventory.
Rural Task Force Program
The Rural Task Force Program provides federal dollars to rural counties with a population under 400,000 for both road and transit capital projects.
Small Urban Program
The Small Urban Program provides federal Surface Transportation Program funding to areas with a population of 5,000 to 49,999 for road and transit capital projects.
Freight Economic Development Program
The Freight Economic Development Program provides grants to rail customers to connect to or expand their use of the rail system. Grants cover up to 50 percent of rail customer infrastructure, like rail spurs, up to $2 million.
Federal Passenger Transportation Program
The Federal Passenger Transportation Program provides funds for transportation projects located in areas that do not meet the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for ozone, carbon monoxide, and/or particulate matters.
Michigan Passenger Transportation Programs
The Michigan Passenger Transportation Programs are paid from Michigan's Comprehensive Transportation Fund (CTF), which is derived from a portion of state motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and state sales taxes on vehicles.
