Spring weight restrictions
Understanding how spring thaw affects roads
During spring thaw, melting snow, ice and frost saturated the ground beneath the pavement, softening the roadbed and increasing the risk of potholes and damage. MDOT sets seasonal weight restrictions based on frost‑depth measurements, road conditions and weather forecasts, and keeps them in place until roadbeds stabilize.
Local agencies may set different restrictions, with signs marking affected routes.
