During spring thaw, melting snow and frost soften the ground under the pavement, increasing the risk of potholes and road damage. MDOT sets seasonal weight restrictions based on frost‑depth data, road conditions and weather forecasts, and keeps them in place until roads stabilize.
Local agencies may set different restrictions, with signs marking affected routes.
