Interchange improvements require closing the westbound I-696 ramp to southbound I-75 on Thursday, July 7

Fast facts:

  • The westbound I-696 ramp to southbound I-75 will be closed July 7 until mid-October for ongoing interchange improvements.
  • The closure is needed to allow for crews to rebuild the connection between the westbound to southbound and westbound to northbound ramps to accommodate the new “braid” design on the northbound ramp.
  • Ramp traffic will be detoured to southbound M-53 (Van Dyke Avenue), then westbound M-102 (Eight Mile Road) to access southbound I-75.

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. - Beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday, July 7, crews will close the westbound I-696 ramp to southbound I-75. During the ramp closure, the posted detour directs traffic onto southbound M-53 (Van Dyke Avenue), then westbound M-102 (Eight Mile Road) back to southbound I-75. The ramp is expected to reopen by mid-October.

Crews will be working to rebuild the connection of the interchange ramps in conjunction with the new braid design. This design will eliminate the merge/weave condition that previously existed by separating the movements. The northbound I-75 exit ramp to 11 Mile Road will braid under the new I-696 bridge on the northbound service drive. When this portion of the project opens to traffic in November, incoming I-696 traffic to northbound I-75 will utilize the new bridge over the 11 Mile Road exit, resulting in safer movements.
