M-85 (Fort Street) project update: Southbound M-85 to be closed at Outer Drive in Detroit/Lincoln Park for weekend work

DETROIT/LINCOLN PARK, Mich. - Beginning 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, until 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, southbound M-85 (Fort Street) will be closed from Outer Drive to just south of Ecorse Creek at Council Avenue.

This closure will provide crews with enough room to safely place concrete on a portion of the Ecorse Creek bridge. Several similar future concrete placements will be needed. This work is weather dependent.

Southbound M-85 (Fort Street) traffic will be detoured to westbound Outer Drive, then southbound I-75 to southbound M-39, back to southbound M-85 (Fort Street).

Once southbound M-85 (Fort Street) reopens Sunday evening, the current traffic configuration will keep southbound M-85 (Fort Street) near Outer Drive reduced to one lane through fall 2024. Bridge work will begin on the northbound side of M-85 (Fort Street) near Outer Drive in January.

Drivers can expect intermittent lane closures on M-85 and Outer Drive adjacent to the Ecorse Creek project through the end of this year due to utility relocation work.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is investing $5.4 million to rebuild the M-85 (Fort Street) bridges over Ecorse Creek in the cities of Lincoln Park and Detroit. The project includes replacing two superstructures; repairing concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks; replacing guardrails; and installing new signs and pavement markings. In addition, the traffic signal at the M-85/Outer Drive intersection will be modernized.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 65 jobs.
