Mackinac Bridge Authority mourns the passing of former chairman Bill Gnodtke
February 18, 2026
ST. IGNACE, Mich. - Reflecting on his many years of service and stewardship of the Mighty Mac, the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) is mourning the Feb. 16 death of longtime former Chairman William H. Gnodtke.
“Bill’s love and devotion for the Mackinac Bridge was second to none, and I had the privilege to serve with him for many years,” said current MBA Chairman Patrick “Shorty” Gleason. “We had many conversations about how we could better serve the community and maintain the structural integrity of the Mighty Mac, and his service to the State of Michigan will never be forgotten.”
Gnodtke was appointed to serve on the Authority in 1997 by Gov. John Engler and was reappointed several times. He completed his term on the Authority in 2018 having served 21 years, 16 as chairman.
“Bill was an avid supporter of the bridge during his time on the board and even after he retired,” said Bridge Director Kim Nowack. “He gave generously of his skills and leadership abilities, and he led the board through some trying times and important issues. His advice and friendship will be greatly missed.”
More information about Gnodtke’s life and funeral services is available in his obituary.
