M-48 overpass repair project at I-75 in Chippewa County resumes July 20

NEWBERRY, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing about $5 million on a project to repair two M-48 overpasses over I-75 in Chippewa County over three. Work on the M-48 overpass at I-75 connecting M-129 to Mackinac Trail started in 2024 and is scheduled to resume on July 20. Work on the M-48 overpass at I-75 near Rudyard was completed in 2025. Remaining work includes temporary supports and other improvements.

Traffic restrictions:
I-75 will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with a reduced speed limit of 60 mph (45 mph where workers present) and a 12-foot width restriction.

M-48 will have one lane of alternating traffic with a temporary traffic signal, along with a 12-foot width restriction.

Jobs numbers:
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 42 jobs.

Safety benefit:
This work will extend the service life of the existing overpass to maintain safe roadways for all users.
