Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced today $634,330 in a Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) Category A grant that will support a total of 16 combined new and retained jobs and $1.7 million of private investments in the City of Durand. TEDF grants help finance critical public highway, road and street projects to move people and product: supplies to local farms, parts to plants and final goods to consumers.
GES Recycling processes scrap metal working mainly with automotive companies. They plan to use the new facility in Durand to add value to restructured metal for other companies to use. GES Recycling considered locating its new facility in another state due to the lack of a suitable industrial road.
“We are excited and grateful to see GES Recycling’s decision to expand their Michigan operations in Durand,” said Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership President and CEO Justin Horvath. “The growth of their metals processing business will not only help strengthen our state’s manufacturing supply chain but also create a significant boost in the local economy. Special thank you to MDOT and the City of Durand for their infrastructure investment, which was critical to moving the project forward.”
The City of Durand will construct a new industrial drive off Durand Road, just north of Lansing Road. The project scope includes new road construction from Durand Road east approximately 0.3 miles, which will feature gravel shoulders and culvert installation. The total project cost is $800,900. The TEDF Category A share is $634,330 (80 percent of the total). The new road is needed to support GES Recycling’s decision to invest in this location and will also support additional growth opportunities in the city.
"The City of Durand is excited to partner with MDOT to further the development of our industrial park,” said Cameron Horvath, City of Durand city manager. “We thank MDOT, the Shiawassee County Economic Development Partnership and GES Recycling for their effort and commitment to Durand's future."
About Transportation Economic Development Fund Grants
Enacted in 1987 and reauthorized in 1993, TEDF "Category A" or "Targeted Industries Program" grants provide state funding for public roadway improvements enable road agencies to address transit deficits of expanding companies by eliminating inadequate roadways as an obstacle to private investment and job creation. Eligible road agencies include MDOT, county road commissions, cities and villages. More information about the program is available online at TEDF website.
