LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced the commitment of $3 million in federal funds for a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) project in Royal Oak. At this stage, MDOT is issuing a conditional commitment reserving federal transportation funds designated by Congress for state-approved projects contingent upon completion of federal funding requirements. These grants create immeasurable socioeconomic value by improving health, stimulating economic development and empowering disadvantaged communities.

In addition to construction of a new shared-use pathway, this project converts a four-lane vehicle layout to three vehicular lanes, freeing vital space for expanding green lawns, pedestrian refuge islands and a protective barrier for pedestrians. The project includes crosswalks, improved lighting and upgraded bus stops. Fashioning flexible streetscapes empowers multimodal transportation, ranging from public transit buses to micromobility in a major regional spine.
