MDOT easing Labor Day holiday travel by pulling back as many barrels as possible

Fast facts:

• MDOT is suspending work and lifting traffic restrictions wherever possible this holiday weekend to ease congestion and increase safety (91 out of 156 projects).
• Although some equipment and traffic configurations will remain over the weekend, suspending construction operations improves safety for workers and motorists. 
• Remember to buckle up, stay alert and avoid distractions at all times when driving. 

LANSING, Mich. - With travelers gearing up for one final summer road trip, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is removing lane restrictions on nearly 60 percent of its road and bridge projects statewide to ease traffic delays for holiday traffic.

"It's been another tremendous year of progress for our state's roads and bridges, and while summer is winding down, that doesn’t mean projects are," said State Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich. "Thanks to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, we still have many projects on our trunklines carrying through into November and beyond, with other smaller-scale projects occurring this fall as well. Even though we've pulled back the barrels in the majority of our work zones, there are still some cases where that just isn't possible. So drivers, remember to slow down, put away those devices and focus on the task at hand. We want everyone to make it back home safely every night."

Travelers are also reminded that for safety and security, the Mackinac Bridge will be closed to public traffic on Labor Day, Sept. 7, from 6:30 a.m. to noon during the Annual Bridge Walk. Southbound I-75 and US-2 traffic will be stopped at Exit 344 on the north side of the bridge; northbound I-75 traffic will be stopped at Exit 337 on the south end. Beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, and continuing until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 91 out of 156 MDOT projects statewide will have lane restrictions removed. While motorists will see suspended operations in most state road work zones for the weekend, drivers are advised that equipment and certain traffic configurations may remain in place, like temporary shifts or shoulder closures. 

MDOT oversees I, M and US routes and is responsible for nearly 10,000 miles of state highways, which carry more than 50 percent of all traffic and approximately 70 percent of commercial traffic in Michigan. 

The following is a list of work zones that will remain active or have lane restrictions during Labor Day weekend. If necessary, detour routes will be posted at the project location. All closures are subject to change. Upper Peninsula

I-75, Chippewa County, will have one lane open in each direction at M-48; M-48 will have one lane of alternating traffic via a temporary signal.

I-75, Mackinac County, will have one lane open in each direction with a traffic shift over Cheeseman Road in St. Ignace.

M-35, Marquette County, will have alternating traffic on one lane at Warner Creek with a temporary traffic signal.

M-64, Gogebic County, will have one lane of alternating traffic at Bingham Creek via temporary signals.

M-77, Alger County, will have one lane open in alternating directions via a temporary traffic signal south of Adams Trail.

M-123, Chippewa County, will have one lane open in alternating directions in Paradise via a temporary traffic signal.

M-123, Luce County, will have one lane open in alternating directions over Auger Creek north of Newberry via a temporary traffic signal.

M-129, Chippewa County, has a posted detour in each direction between M-80 and M-28.

US-2, Iron County, will have one lane of alternating traffic between Stager Lake Road and Airport Road via a temporary traffic signal.

US-2, Gogebic County, will have one lane of alternating traffic between Sampson Road and Great Lakes Road via a temporary traffic signal.

US-41, Houghton County, will have one lane of alternating traffic at the Sturgeon River via a temporary traffic signal.

Northern Lower Peninsula

US-31, Grand Traverse County, will have northbound lanes detoured near Interlochen.

US-31, Manistee County, will have one lane open in each direction in Bear Lake with a traffic shift. 

Due to flooding damage in April and June, M-119 in Emmet County remains closed at Division Road and from West Stutsmanville Road to Robinson Road. Through-traffic is detoured via Island View Road and North State Road, and West Stutsmanville Road, South State Road and Robinson Road. Most of the closed M-119 segments are accessible to residents and local traffic but are not open to through-traffic.

West Michigan

146th Avenue, Allegan County, is closed over US-131. 144th Street has lane closures over US-131 as well.

Martin Luther King Jr. Street in Grand Rapids is closed between Ionia Avenue and northbound US-131. The northbound US-131 on and off ramps are also closed.

White Lake Drive, Muskegon County, has one lane open in each direction over US-31 via temporary traffic signals.

I-96, Ionia County, has lane closures and traffic shifts between Sunfield and Bliss roads. Eastbound I-96 ramp closures are in place at Jordan Lake Road and M-66.  

I-196, Allegan County, has one northbound lane closed over the Kalamazoo River near Saugatuck. Old Allegan Road is closed under I-196.

M-20 (Perry Avenue), Mecosta County, has lane closures over US-131. The westbound M-20 entrance ramp to southbound US-131 is closed.

M-37, Kent County, has lane closures and traffic shifts between 68th Street and 92nd Street in Caledonia. 

M-45 (Lake Michigan Drive), Ottawa County, has one eastbound lane closed between Trillium Drive and 14th Avenue. 

M-46 (Apple Avenue), Muskegon County, is closed between 1st Street and Creston Street in Muskegon. 

M-46 (Apple Avenue), Muskegon County, is closed over Crockery Creek between Ravenna Road and Newaygo Road. 

M-66, Osceola County, is closed over the Muskegon River between US-10 and M-115.

M-222, Allegan County, has one westbound lane closed from Main Street to Water Street in Allegan.

US-10, Osceola County, has lane closures and traffic shifts between N. Industrial Park Drive and the Muskegon River.

The US-31/I-96 interchange in Norton Shores, Muskegon County, has lane closures and the following ramp closures:

• Northbound US-31 Exit 110B to westbound I-96.
• Southbound US-31 Exit 110A to eastbound I-96.
• Eastbound I-96 Exit 1B to northbound US-31.
• The eastbound Airline Road entrance ramp to southbound US-31.

US-131 in Grand Rapids has lane closures in each direction between I-196 and Wealthy Street. The following ramps are closed:

• Eastbound I-196 Exit 77B to southbound US-131.
• The Pearl Street entrance ramp to southbound US-131.
• Southbound US-131 Exit 85A to Market Avenue.
• Southbound US-131 Exit 84A to Wealthy Street.

Southwest Michigan

I-94, Berrien County, has two lanes open in each direction between Britain Avenue and Niles Avenue. Eastbound exits 29 (Pipestone Avenue) and 30 (Napier Avenue) are closed.

I-94, Berrien County has two lanes open in each direction between I-196 and M-140.

M-89 in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, is closed and detoured between Dickman Road and Michigan Avenue.

M-96/I-94 Business Loop (Michigan Avenue), Calhoun County, is closed over I-94 and detoured.

M-139, Berrien County, is closed and detoured from Pipestone Road to I-94 Business Loop.

M-294 (Beadle Lake Road) in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, is closed and detoured between I-94 and M-96 (Columbia Avenue).

Central Michigan and Thumb

I-69, Genesee and Shiawassee counties, has the following restrictions:

• One lane closed in each direction between Morrish Road and Bristol Road, with a traffic shift.
• One lane closed in each direction between M-13 and M-17.
• Westbound I-69 Exit 129 to Miller Road and the Miller Road entrance ramp to westbound I-69 are closed. 

I-69, St. Clair County, has one lane closed in each direction over the Pine River.

M-13/M-84 (Lafayette Street Bridge), Bay County, is closed and detoured.

M-53, Sanilac County, is closed between Argyle Road and M-81. Detour: Argyle Road, Germania Road and Cass City Road.

M-54, Genesee County, will have one lane closed in each direction over the Blackmore and Alpine Drain.

M-58, Saginaw County, has eastbound traffic shifted to the westbound side between Avalon Avenue and Bay Street.

US-10 Business Route/M-20, Midland County, has westbound traffic shifted to the eastbound side.

Southern Michigan

I-75, Monroe County, has one lane closed in each direction between Otter Creek and Dunbar roads. The following ramps are closed:

• Northbound I-75 Exit 11 to Laplaisance Road.
• The Laplaisance Road entrance ramp to northbound I-75.
• The Otter Creek Road entrance ramp to northbound I-75.

I-94 Business Loop (Michigan Avenue/Louis Glick Highway), Jackson County, has eastbound traffic detoured from Jackson Street to Mechanic Street in Jackson.

I-96, Livingston County, has two lanes open in each direction with all traffic shifted to the eastbound side between Chilson Road and Dorr Road. The following ramps are closed:

• The Grand River Road entrance ramp to eastbound I-96.
• Westbound I-96 Exit 141 to Grand River Road.
• The Latson Road entrance ramp to westbound I-96.

I-96, Livingston County, has the following restrictions at Grand River Avenue (Exit 145):

• I-96 has two lanes open in each direction with all traffic shifted to the westbound side.
• Westbound Grand River Avenue has one lane closed at I-96.

M-52 (Main Street), Lenawee County, has one lane open in each direction between Cross Street and M-34 (Beecher Street).

US-23, Washtenaw County, has the northbound right shoulder closed at Buck Creek.

US-127, Clinton and Ingham counties, has the follow restrictions:

• Southbound US-127 has one lane closed from I-69 to Lake Lansing Road.
• Northbound US-127 has a traffic shift from Lake Lansing Road to I-69.
• The eastbound and westbound Lake Lansing Road entrance ramps to southbound US-127 are closed.
• Eastbound I-69 Exit 89A to southbound US-127 is closed. 

US-127, Hillsdale County, has one lane closed in each direction at Bean Creek.

Metro Detroit

Macomb County

The I-94/M-29 (23 Mile Road) interchange has the following restrictions:

• 23 Mile Road has one lane closed in each direction.
• I-94 has shoulder closures in each direction.
• The westbound 23 Mile Road entrance ramp to southbound I-94 is closed.
• The eastbound 23 Mile Road entrance ramp to northbound I-94 is closed. 

Oakland County

I-75 has three northbound lanes open from Big Beaver Road to Coolidge Highway.

I-696 has two westbound lanes open with multiple ramp closures from Dequindre Road to M-10 (Lodge Freeway). Eastbound I-696 is closed.

Wayne County

The eastbound Jefferson Avenue entrance ramp to southbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) is closed.

I-94 has two lanes open in each direction between I-275 and US-12 (Michigan Avenue). The following ramps are closed:

• Southbound Wayne Road to eastbound I-94.
• Eastbound I-94 Exit 197 to Vining Road.
• Westbound Merriman Road to eastbound I-94.
• Eastbound I-94 Exit 199 to southbound Middle Belt Road.
• Westbound Ecorse Road to westbound I-94.
• Eastbound Ecorse Road to eastbound I-94.
• Eastbound I-94 Exit 200 to eastbound Ecorse Road.

The I-94/M-39 (Southfield Freeway) interchange has ramp and lane closures in all directions.

The eastbound I-96 local lanes are closed at M-39 (Southfield Freeway).

M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) has the northbound right lane closed from Mack Avenue to Forest Avenue.

Old M-14 (Ann Arbor Road) has one lane open in each direction between Ann Arbor Trail and Levan Road.

M-10 (Lodge Freeway) has one southbound lane open from Howard Street to Jefferson Avenue.

M-14/I-96 has two eastbound lanes open from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road, and two westbound lanes open from Levan Road to Beck Road. The following ramps are closed:

• Southbound I-275 to westbound M-14.
• Westbound M-14 to southbound I-275.
• Northbound I-275 to westbound M-14. 

M-85 (Fort Street) has one westbound lane open between Second Avenue and 10th Street.

M-85 (Fort Street) has one westbound lane open from 10th Street to 14th Street.

M-102 (8 Mile Road) has two westbound lanes open from M-39 to Lahser Road.

US-24 (Telegraph Road) has one lane open in each direction at the US-12 (Michigan Avenue) interchange. US-12 has lane closures in each direction between Outer Drive and US-24. The following ramps are closed:

• Eastbound US-12 to southbound US-24.
• Southbound US-24 to eastbound US-12.
