The Vehicle Equipment and Advisory Team (VEAT) is a collaborative group that brings together transit agency representatives and MDOT staff to support the development and ongoing improvement of statewide vehicle specifications.
VEAT was established to ensure that transit agencies have a direct voice in the vehicle procurement process. The team serves as a forum for sharing operational experience, identifying emerging needs and recommending updates to vehicle specifications that reflect real-world use and industry best practices.
The vehicle specification is typically distributed to VEAT members approximately one year before a vehicle contract is set to expire. Members review the document and prepare comments or suggestions in advance of VEAT meetings, which may be held in person or virtually.
All recommendations are reviewed by the vehicle procurement analyst, who makes the final determination on whether proposed changes are accepted or denied.
VEAT is composed of representatives from transit agencies across the state. Membership is intended to reflect a broad range of agency sizes, service types and operational perspectives.
If a VEAT member steps down, the vehicle procurement analyst will reach out to transit agencies to identify a replacement. Current VEAT members may also recommend individuals they believe would be a good fit for the team.
Transit agency staff who are interested in participating in VEAT or learning more about the team are encouraged to contact the vehicle procurement analyst or inquire by email at MDOT-OPT-Procurement@Michigan.gov. Participation provides an opportunity to contribute directly to vehicle specification development and to collaborate with peers across the state.
