As part of the Office of Aeronautics all-weather access program, pilot information systems are located at many airports. These units enable pilots to access weather information, including near real-time radar images.
Forty-one Automated Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) provide continuous weather information to pilots via voice, telephone, and computer. Section technicians maintain these systems.
The Michigan Sectional Chart provides pilots with the essential information needed to navigate Michigan’s airspace safely. It includes ATC flight‑following boundaries, center frequencies and other key navigation details. The chart is no longer mailed to Michigan pilots, but it can be downloaded or picked up at participating distribution airports.

AWOS and Automated Surface Observation Systems (ASOS) are installed at airports across the state. They provide weather observations 24 hours a day without human involvement. The systems report wind, ceiling, visibility, temperature, dew point, altimeter setting, and any recorded remarks. Those systems with "present weather" sensors also report certain precipitation types. AWOS systems are installed and maintained by the Office of Aeronautics in cooperation with each airport. Pilot examiners are designated by one of two FAA Flight Standards District Offices in Grand Rapids or Detroit. The following are the types of tests an examiner is authorized to conduct:
P - Private Pilot
C - Commercial Pilot
I - Instrument Rating
ATP - Airline Transport Pilot
SES - Single engine sea
Multi - Designated in one or more types of multiengine airplanes, call for more information
CFI-I - Flight Instructor, Initial Certification
CFI-R - Flight Instructor, Additional Rating (e.g. CFII and/or MEI), Renewal, and Reinstatement
Aircraft type indicates authorization in specific multiengine airplane or helicopter.
