Michigan Employer Advisor: June 2026

UIA launches new webpage to explain law changes

The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) launched Michigan.gov/UIALawChanges to help employers, Third Party Administrators (TPAs), and claimants navigate key unemployment law changes going into effect in mid-July.

How new laws affect employers

  • Domestic violence separations Employees who leave a job due to domestic violence may now qualify for benefits. Benefits will be charged to the nonchargeable benefits account — not the employer’s experience account. An experience account tracks taxes paid in, benefits paid out, and an employer’s history of layoffs. The lower the experience rating, the lower the tax rate.
  • Work Share flexibility Work Share plans will allow employers to reduce employee hours by 10 percent to 60 percent while workers would qualify for partial unemployment benefits. This gives businesses more options to manage temporary slowdowns without layoffs.
  • Work search updates Claimants must report three work search activities each week when they certify for benefits. Employers may want to share this update with workers — especially if layoffs are possible — so their employees understand the claims eligibility requirements.

New laws: What you need to know

Thank you for supporting MiUI account activation!

The UIA appreciates the employers who have already activated their MiUI accounts and granted access to their third-party administrators.
If you have not activated your MiUI account, please do so. In most cases, employers who have not activated their account also have not filed their quarterly wage report and are now late. An inactive account prevents filing reports, and completing other tasks.

How to confirm your MiUI account is active

Your MiUI account is active once you have:

  • Completed the employer account initiation process
  • Authenticated using your FEIN, EAN, and MiUI Activation Code

If the system still prompts you for your Activation Code, it's not yet active. READ MORE.

Q2 wage reports due Monday, July 27

The next round of quarterly wage reports are due by Monday, July 27. Watch the Quarterly Reports in MiUI YouTube video for more information.

If you have any questions between now and the report filing deadline, visit MiUI University or search for the resources available on the Office of the Employer Ombudsman (OEO) web page.

You can contact OEO by phone at 1-855-484-2636, then select Option 4.
