Michigan Employer Advisor: October 2026

Five essential tips for MiUI's benefits Go Live

Employers must activate their own accounts ASAP!

The final transition to Michigan’s modern MiUI system takes place at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 2026. Once MiUI is live, it will become the single system for all unemployment insurance functions.

What you need to know

  1. MiWAM for Employers will go offline permanently on Nov. 9 when MiUI’s benefits system rolls out. You will no longer have access to MiWAM after this date, and you will have to use MiUI only for all tax and benefits tasks.
    • Employers must activate their own MiUI account immediately. A third party administrator (TPA) cannot activate an employer’s account — only the employer can complete this step. If your MiUI account is not activated before MiWAM shuts down, you may be unable to meet required tax and benefits obligations.
  2. MiUI University is your primary resource
    • Visit MiUI University for system information, videos, readiness guides, and instructions.
  3. Know where to go for more support
  4. Read newsletters and share with others
    • In addition to receiving the Employer Advisor, employers and TPAs should also be receiving the MiUI Minute, a quick newsletter with high priority updates. Please share this information widely.
  5. Watch for actionable steps and updates
    • The MiUI Minute, MiUI University, and the UIA website provide updates and guidance. Review these resources often — including FAQs and fact sheets — and check UIA’s YouTube for tutorial videos.

UIA Downtime Period set for November

To prepare for the launch of MiUI’s benefits system on Nov. 9, the MiDAS/MiWAM platform will be taken offline permanently at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2. This begins a Downtime Period that will continue until MiUI for Benefits rolls out at 8 a.m. Nov. 9.

During this period, all UIA Local Offices will be closed, and Customer Service and Office of Employer Ombudsman phone lines will be unavailable.

However, all of the UIA's online resources will remain accessible on its website. Content will also still be accessible on MiUI University and the UIA's YouTube channel, YouTube.com/@michiganuia

Other service closures

Here is when UIA Local Offices and phone lines will be unavailable in November:

  • Downtime Period: 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2 to 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9
  • Election Day: Tuesday, Nov. 3
  • Veterans Day: Wednesday, Nov. 11
  • Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, Nov. 26
  • Day after Thanksgiving: Friday, Nov. 27

Resources such as Michigan.gov/UIA and MiUI University will remain available.

New additions: Work Share MiUI Guide, How to Upload Work Share Employee Guide

If you haven’t visited MiUI University recently, now is a great time to check back. New training materials and guides are added several times each month to support employers and TPAs.

Recent additions include:

These resources are especially important as Michigan’s Work Share program continues to grow. Work Share allows employers to reduce employee hours without laying off their trained and experienced workforce. Workers participating in Work Share can receive partial unemployment benefits to offset some of their lost wages.

With MiUI’s benefits launch scheduled for Nov. 9, both employers and workers participating in Work Share will be required to complete weekly certifications in the new system. More guides and updates will continue to be posted on MiUI University, so be sure to check in regularly to stay prepared.

Tool simplifies youth employment steps

Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity (LEO) unveils new online service

Michigan's Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity (LEO) launched a new Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP) on Oct. 2.

YEPP serves as a single statewide online system for completing youth employment permits.

Minors, families, and employers now must use YEPP instead of local schools, which no longer issue permits.

This new portal allows permits to be completed online at any time, providing flexibility and convenience.

Employers must register with LEO before hiring a minor and report when the minor’s employment ends. READ MORE.
