What does this look like?
Pests are managed with care for ecosystem services surrounding the farm. Herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides are applied precisely and only when necessary. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices are consistently implemented. Beneficial organisms are encouraged to thrive and outcompete pests.Why is this helpful?
Repeated, long-term application of pesticides can have significant effects on soil health by reducing microbial diversity and biomass in the soil. These effects alter the soil’s overall ecology and disrupt essential functions like nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition. However, healthy, resilient soils can recover from pesticide use and restore these functions if given the chance. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a framework that makes use of cultural management practices alongside chemical pesticide options to reduce pest pressures while allowing soils to recover. These practices include increasing on-farm biodiversity to draw beneficial species and precision application of pesticides. The Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) is a simple calculator created by agroecologists at Cornell University that helps growers interpret the potential impacts of pesticides in use on the farm.
