Utilizing Organic Nutrient Sources
What does this look like?
Manure-based fertility is prioritized for its soil-building qualities when it is not over-applied as a waste product. Nutrient application is tailored to the needs of plants using organic sources as much as possible following nutrient management plans. Nutrient demand is reduced over time with increased nutrient cycling in soils due to carbon-rich manure application, especially in conjunction with no-till and cover cropping practices. Any synthetic nutrient application is informed by decision support systems (e.g., 4R, soil testing) and precision technologies (e.g., GPS, subsurface applicators).Why is this helpful?
Incorporating organic nutrient sources (i.e., plant or animal manure or compost) contributes meaningfully to soil health. These fertilizers contain not only nitrogen and phosphorus, but also microbes, carbon, potassium and other nutrients, improving the ecological function of soils. Additionally, nutrients in organic fertilizers often stay in the soil longer than synthetic sources, which are highly susceptible to leaving the field via runoff or as gas emissions. Care should be taken to ensure that organic fertilizers do not contain unwanted and potentially hazardous contaminants such as heavy metals, PFAS, pharmaceutical residues, or microplastics.
